My ceramic art practice embraces the theme 'Terra Botanica,' an artistic exploration deeply intertwined with the essence of the land and the unique botanicals nurtured by distinct terroirs. This journey is marked by the honing of specialised ceramic techniques, underpinned by a profound reverence for the land. It's through this connection with the earth that we find sustenance, not only in the form of food but also in the flourishing of individuals and communities. My work is a tribute to this symbiosis, celebrating the nurturing power of the land and its gifts.
At its core, 'Terra Botanica' will pay tribute to the essence of land. This concept delves into the influence of regional climates, soils, and landscapes – elements reminiscent of the winemaking concept of terroir – on the distinct traits of native plants and the communities that depend on these natural environments for their livelihood.
My ceramic creations are narratives and stories, capturing and celebrating the singular environmental conditions of each region I choose to explore. Every piece in Terra Botanica will represent an abstracted local flora. Abstracted to make visible the hidden or less visible parts of the whole in a way that exaggerates or amplifies natural shape and form. The pieces, once fired, will be the tactile stories of the land, woven from the deep connection between nature and the art it inspires, inviting the observer to interpret not only what is physically seen within the frame but also the metaphoric reality that lies beyond. Thus, the project celebrates the unseen diversity and richness of the land and its flora.
An innovation to be implemented while building Terra Botanica will lie in the use of modified slips and glazes with the inclusion of local terrain elements and compounds. The unique chemical compositions that go on to penetrate or cover the clay are there to celebrate the unique compounds found within a local terroir. The alchemy of the kiln is what changes these elements, bringing out hidden qualities and hues that relate the artwork directly to its place of origin.
This process enriches the ceramics with the tangible essence of the land, thereby forging a deeper meaning and more profound connection with the viewer.
At the heart of these artistic efforts is a refinement and continued development of my ceramic skills in order to express myself with more ease. Working with clay, understanding its changes in the kiln, and finally learning how to apply these specially formulated glazes or slips are all essential for the proper translation of my vision. This journey of enhancing skills is important for this project, where every piece not only needs to captivate the viewer's eye but also tell a story about the local land.
Terra Botanica goes beyond artistic expression; it is a medium to create a deeper appreciation among the people of their local environment. It is to illustrate that sense of belonging and stewardship towards our organic world by showcasing the intrinsic link between the land and what it bears. It invites the viewer to plunge into the peculiarity of local landscapes and realise how these define their world and life.
'Terra Botanica' serves as the guiding structure for my artistic exploration. My ceramic art pieces, deeply rooted in the local terroir, are enhanced by the innovative application of native glazes and slips, celebrating the diversity of nature. This project actively involves its audience, inviting them to engage not just visually, but also through their senses and personal interpretations. This interaction fosters a deep and meaningful appreciation of the natural world and the communities it nurtures.
